R-SCAN

Radiology Support, Communication and Alignment Network
R-SCAN enables radiologists and referring clinicians to collaborate to improve imaging appropriateness. Use our web-based tools and CDS technology to optimize imaging care, reduce unnecessary imaging exams and lower the cost of care.

Why Participate in R-SCAN?

  • Improve patient care by promoting value-based imaging
  • Earn up to 20 Practice Improvement (PI)-CME for practices conducting an R-SCAN project
  • Satisfy MOC Part IV requirements
  • Fulfill improvement activity requirements for practices participating in the CMS Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)
  • Avail clinicians of no-cost CME for completing activities related to value-based imaging
  • Help your practice prepare for the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) requirements

How to Participate

R-SCAN projects follow three basic phases:

Phase A: Baseline Data Collection – Review ordering patterns for a specific imaging topic; e.g., imaging for low back pain, and with a specific group of referring clinicians.

Phase B: Educational Intervention – Carry out an educational program to improve the ordering of imaging exams. Educational materials are available for imaging topics related to several Choosing Wisely recommendations.

Phase C: Post-Education Data Collection – Review ordering patterns to determine if the educational collaboration resulted in improvement, then submit your final report.

Two options are available for conducting an R-SCAN project:
  1. Participate using CDS R-SCAN registry data

Participants in the CDS R-SCAN Registry can use their registry data report to identify topics and collaborators for an R-SCAN quality improvement project.
    • to the CDS R-SCAN Registry report
    • Read the guide for conducting a project using CDS R-SCAN Registry data
  2. Participate using the R-SCAN web portal

Participants can use either the CareSelect Imaging® web-based clinical decision support platform or a spreadsheet template to demonstrate improvements as a result of conducting an R-SCAN project. See Data Entry Information.
